A clear path through an Iowa divorce.

In Iowa, divorce is called dissolution of marriage. Iowa is a no-fault state, so neither spouse has to prove the other did something wrong to get divorced.

What gets decided

The agreements that shape the next chapter.

The house and other property. We identify what needs to be divided, including retirement accounts.

Debts. A final agreement should make clear who will be responsible for which obligations.

Support. In some cases, one spouse pays support to the other for a time.

Children. If you have children, custody, a parenting plan and child support are decided too.

Two routes

Uncontested or contested, in plain words.

Uncontested means you and your spouse can agree on the terms. We prepare the papers and guide you through the required steps.

Contested means there are important terms you cannot yet agree on. Those cases go to mediation first. About nine in ten of the firm’s contested cases settle without a trial.
