Family law / Custody

A parenting plan built for ordinary Tuesdays.

A good plan is practical, specific and made for the life your children actually have, not just for the moment you sign it.

Joint legal custody

Parents share important decisions about their children, including education, medical care and religion.

Physical care

One parent has primary physical care, while both parents usually have scheduled time with the children.

Joint physical care

The children spend substantial time in both homes under a defined schedule.

The plan itself

Make the hard moments less improvised.

A parenting plan can cover the school-week routine, holidays, summers and how parents communicate when something needs to change. Divorcing parents must also complete Iowa’s parenting class. Before a contested custody trial, mediation is required.

Existing orders

Changing an existing custody order.

When a parent moves or a child’s needs change, the order may need to change too.

If both parents agree, the change is a flat $1,250. If not, it usually goes to mediation first.
